Diplo in Tucson

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

I just found out Diplo is coming to Hotel Congress here in Tucson tomorrow. It’s safe to say I’m pretty excited. If you’re in the area you should come and we will party.

I hope he plays AA 24/7 because I will absolutely pop off.

Below is the song if you can’t make it to the concert.

Tommy Sparks

Sunday, March 29, 2009

Tommy Sparks is crazy (in a good way) and this video for “She’s Got Me Dancing” proves it. I’ve been posting some pretty weird videos. I think it’s just a phase.

BONUS: Here is an absolute smoker of a tune. Tommy Sparks gets the remix treatment from the one and only Yuksek and boy are they a good combo.

The Sound of Arrows

Saturday, March 28, 2009

I first became enamored with The Sound of Arrows when I watched their mini-video for their song “M.A.G.I.C.”. Unicorns and flying whales are a quick way to my heart. Well for some reason I never even checked if they had an album until today. Much to my surprise they’ve had an album out for almost a year. I try to stay on top of music but I can’t catch it all.

Their album “Danger!” sounds like dreamy adventure into melancholy land full of potential greatness. Need a better description? It kind of sounds like Sufjan Stevens if he replaced his fascination with American cities with Disney movies and ice cream sprinkles. Still not good enough? It sounds like you’re back in 5th grade and your girlfriend of 3 days broke up with you and you got kind of bummed but then you realized it was chicken tender day for lunch and that NHL ‘96 was coming out that day and you were totally going play that game until your thumbs blistered and your eyes bled.

So it’s good. Check some songs out.

Soulwax

Friday, March 27, 2009

I watched my Soulwax DVD (Part of the Weekend Never Dies) again last night and was reminded of just how amazing these guys are. Their music is the best mix of rock and electro ever done (I guess it helps that they started as a rock/punk band).

Download my favorite song by them (it may be one of the best uses of bass in a song… ever) and while its downloading watch the video of them performing Justice’s Phantom. The all white get ups are so classy.

One of the Best Articles Ever Written

Friday, March 27, 2009

This is for all the video game nerds out there.

Have you ever wondered who would win in a fight between the Madden Ambulance and Jeremy Roenick from NHLPA ‘93? Or maybe Mario Vs. the Bison from Oregon Trail?

Yes? Me too and so did Patrick Hruby who wrote an article entitled “Greatest Video Game Character”.

This is a hilarious multi-bracket deathmatch to find who really was the best. Not only are the matchups great but the little one liners that Hruby uses to comment on each match are hilarious.

If you need any more encouragement to check this out here are few of my favorite match ups:

(8) Carmen Sandiego vs. (9) Bison from Oregon Trail
Whaddya mean the wagon can’t carry 800 pounds of meat?

(1) Kung-Fu Guy in White Gi vs. (9) Bald Space Marines
Sadly, the post-apocalyptic future of interstellar drop ships and cybernetic power armor does not include Rogaine.

(3) Wooden Crates vs. (14) First Aid Kits/Assault Rifles Just Left on the Floor
In all fairness, sometimes the first aid kits and assault rifles are inside the wooden crates.

(8) Madden Ambulance vs. (9) Gretzky’s Blood
Toughest matchup in the tourney. Ambulance gets the nod on sheer absurdity.

Pharrell vs. McDonald’s

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Pharrell is kind of amazing as is this video. It actually took me a little while to realize this, but it’s confirmed. Pharrell is super cool. In this video Pharrell tries to convince the McDonald’s staff at the Paris airport to open a couple of minutes early as 6am approaches. He uses song, dance and refrains from saying “do you know who I am?”. Kind of amazing indeed.

Also, here’s “When Skateboard Came”, a DJ Drama and Pharrell track from a few years back. Enjoy the overly aggressive yelling of DJ Drama combined with ice cream inspired rhymes of Skateboard P himself.

Freshjive “Piracy” + New Era

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Like excessively fresh kicks, 59FIFTY New Era hats seemed like a conflict with growing up. It’s nice to see these new ones from Freshjive, which are a departure from the variations of MLBA designs we’re used to seeing. The “Piracy” hat features a corduroy upper and a satin lining. It also has some good details like the sailor rope and embroidered crest. You can get the two colourways at the New Era store in Toronto and I’m guessing it would be worth checking their other flagship stores worldwide. They’re legit, which means you can also get them in Japan through ZOZOTOWN.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Had to give some love to an under-appreciated show on FX. If you have never seen It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, you really should. It’s like Seinfeld but all the people are 10 years younger, and drinking and drugs are involved a lot more. Check out the clip above of the infamous “green man” that has become a mini sensation in the US. Green man is saving your life right now bro.

(NOTE: This video is on Hulu and thus only for our US readers)
