I don’t use exclamation marks often but this is one of those special times where I have to. “Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do”, Major Lazer‘s debut album dropped today and it’s a bomb!
For those of you living under a rock, Major Lazer is a collab between two of the biggest producers in the world, Switch and Diplo. Being the original and imaginative producers they are, they set out to produce a reggae/dancehall CD instead of their regular electronic club tunes. A whitey from England and a whitey from America? Yes, yes, and more yes. This isn’t a watered down white man’s version of the genre though.
Where this album is so successful is showing that this genre has evolved immensely since Bob Marley and all it needed was some talented producers to come and re-invigorate the sound that so many of the artists they worked with have always been doing. Because every song is a collaboration, they are able to turn every song on the CD into a hit single for that particular artist.
It’s all really very inspiring. Seriously, this is the best album of the year. I know we’re only halfway through the year but this is going to be hard to beat. I’ll post a couple songs to wet your appetite (2 favorites that haven’t been posted on every other blog) but don’t be a tool, buy this album and support these guys. Consider it a sacrifice to the music gods.
