Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to see two US ex-presidents speak about their time in office. I thought to myself, this is a historic event in my life. As I listened to old MJ albums prepping for his comeback tour, I thought to myself, the concert will be the single most historic event of my life to date.
Michael Jackson dies a legend. His life is of significance beyond billions of others. As I contemplated the significance of his life and death, I chose to focus on the positive that he achieved and his capacity to inspire others. To achieve his level of success, one cannot exist anywhere inside the box. There has to be something fundamentally different in you as an individual to influence and lead so many people in life.
Although some choose to criticize even moments after his untimely death, it’s important to take a moment and appreciate how exceptional Michael Jackson was. Travel the world, even to developing nations and you can see the King of Pop worshiped. Thriller still holds the record for most albums sold (65 million), 27 years after it’s release. He has sold 750 million albums in his lifetime.
Next time you’re watching kids moon walking and crotch grabbing, don’t undermine the significance of these moves. Ask yourself instead, what musical artist has been of more significance to this world?
