Lemon Magazine | Handsome Clothing Co.

We constantly try to bring you the best of everything on Handsome whether it be music, fashion, movies, tv, or anything else. Sadly our love of reading doesn’t always come across on this blog. In an attempt to curb this dangerous trend I must talk about one of the newest magazines I have discovered, Lemon Magazine.

The first thing thing that caught my attention was a beautiful picture of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (1/2 of Daft Punk) in full robotic garb. I had to pick up the magazine just for that, but I was pleasantly surprised that the pages behind the cover were equally impressive. The guys at Lemon do not follow the “rules” of a typical magazine, and that is exactly what the dwindling industry of print material needs.

Gorgeous design, original page layout, and articles covering a breadth of topics are something that you don’t see much of anymore, but the annual Lemon is out to change all of that. I think their own description says it the best: “LEMON is “Pop Culture With A Twist”: a new breed of magazine that stakes its claim at the intersection of 60s-70s Pop and 21st century hyper-culture. Designed and produced with obsessive attention to every last detail, each issue of LEMON is pure Pop Art.”

Lemon 4 (the issue I picked up entitled “Heroes”) features exclusive contributions from David Bowie himself, Daft Punk, Buzz Aldrin, John Hurt, Iggy Pop, Justice, and many more. Besides the amazing visuals I’m really into their music section where each interview is reproduced in a graphic novel format. A magazine with a Justice comic about their love of Wesley Snipes? I’ll be getting my subscription ASAP and I suggest you do the same.

The Big Pink – Dominos

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Khristian Mendoza | Handsome Clothing Co.

I’m not gonna lie. When I first posted about The Big Pink I did not expect to talk about them again. Don’t get me wrong, the song I posted (their first single “Velvet”) was really good but I can’t say anthemic rock music is really what I’m into right now.

I probably would have never come back to them if it wasn’t for the insane outpouring of hype as a result of their newest song. The band is currently giving away their newest single “Dominoes” (off their upcoming album A Brief History Of Love dropping September 14th) on their website and I had to take a listen.

I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to not only match the epicness of “Velvet” but, I think, surpass it. I still stick to my description of their music as sounding “like something that M83, Oasis, and …And You Will Know Us By the Trial of Dead would make if they were all locked in a room for a weekend watching movies from the 90s.”

The song tells the story of a promiscuous man and his trials and tribulations with women. With lines like “As soon as I love her it’s been too long/ and I really loved breaking your heart” and a chorus of “These girls fall like domino’s domino’s!”, many men (especially a few of my friends) should be able to identify. Cop it.

Tron Legacy Trailer

Thursday, July 30, 2009

The sequel to Disney’s visually groundbreaking Tron (now called Tron Legacy) recently released their trailer and we couldn’t leave any other Tron fans out there in the dark. It looks like this movie will mimic the first and push visuals and style to the modern limit.

Albeit impressive, I am worried about a couple things:

- The new helmets are questionable. What was wrong with the old hockey helmets and some glow stick piping? Now they look like the toolshed that brings his helmet to class to make very clear to females that he rides two wheels instead of four and is therefore muy dangeroso.

- These new images are super slick and Hollywood-ized. One of my favorite parts of the old Tron was the graininess and distortion that came through with the filming technique they used. This has scary potential to be like the remake of Speed Racer with that kid who looks like he’s ten years old from Girl Next Door.

Despite these worries there are just so many potential upsides, the most glaring of them being the fact that Daft Punk is doing the soundtrack. Check out the video below to listen to the theme song they crafted and watch some Tron uber-nerds see a bike from the movie. SPOILER: They collectively lose their shit.

Barletta Panther Remixes

Handsome Clothing Co. | Bas Zoontjens

Since I’m in Toronto at the moment, it is only appropriate that I post about one of our favorite local artists, Barletta. Recently, Salacious Sound held a remix competition for Barletta’s “Panther” and the results were pretty impressive.

My personal favorite songs coming from the competition come from Torro Torro (who came in 3rd place) and ZEDS DEAD (who came in 1st). It’s hard to pick a favorite between the two but ZEDS DEAD production is top of the pops. Both songs are influenced by D&B and bassline and dubstep and all that good stuff with the Torro Torro tune adding a bit of a more electro feel with some four-on-the-floor beats for easy mixing.

Get ready for the weekend (long weekend if you’re in TO) with these gems.

Billionaire Boys Club Hunting Pattern

Looking at BBC/Ice Cream‘s last few lines, I started to feel that there was an excess of consistency in their design. Their newest pattern, “The Hunting Pattern” just changed my perspective on their design practice. The new design looks like a painting from a country club coming together with some classic street styles. Check the backpack, t-shirts and blazer it’s available in. Respect to Nigo and Pharrell.

I haven’t been repping Adidas Original for a while now, but some of their new pieces have got me thinking twice about it. Adidas Originals has gotten designer James Bond on board again for the some apparel for the David Beckham Line. A structured cardigan and a leather track jacket both caught my eye as the stand out pieces of the collection. Respect for keeping our minds open in life.

B. Rich – It’ll Be Alright

B. Rich | Handsome Clothing Co.

On my little R&D trip for Handsome I’ve been really digging the musical stylings of Pittsburgh’s B. Rich. The kid has been doing it right for years, but he really seems to be hitting his stride right now.

One of his latest songs that has been fulfilling my unquenchable thirst for bassline is a tune called “It’ll Be Alright”. It’s off his new EP entitled “Make Me Dance” and has everything I could wish for: a bouncy tribal beat (tribal beats are all the rage these days), some wonky horns, and a whole lot of wobble & bass.

My only complaint is the lyrics that are very house-track-from 2002-esque. I’d ove to hear Fake Blood get their hands on the vocal track and take this to the next level (or I could see Drop The Lime do some damage). Regardless, this song is still tops and must be heard.

Eastbound & Down

eastbound and down

When Eastbound & Down debuted I thought I’d check it out not anticipating much more than a mildly entertaining half hour. The Will Ferrel and Danny McBride comedy combo was really impressive. It’s one of the funniest shows in the last few years and not only that, the arguably shallow-humoured show left me emotional at the end of their six episode season.

Now, Eastbound & Down is available for you through their Season One DVD as well as a Men.Style interview with Danny McBride on living life as Kenny Powers. Check it one time:

Hey! Kenny Powers! Fuck you!
Ha, ha, yeah. Greetings from Belfast.

Do you get that a lot? People talking to you as if you are, in fact, Kenny Powers?
Well, I do get a lot of shots thrown my way in bars, these days—people yelling, “Hey! Kenny!” I figure it comes with the territory, because I play Kenny on the show, and I also write the show, so people assume we must be the same person, more or less. I’m cool with that. I mean, I’ve dedicated so much of myself to getting that fucking thing on the air, it’s flattering when I get some recognition. If people are still yelling “Hey, fuck you, Kenny Powers!” at me in five years, maybe I’ll feel different.

Is there stuff you put on, on the Eastbound set, that immediately gets you into Kenny Powers mode?
Those shirts are one thing. That was a big focus for us, putting together the costumes—you know, things like big V-necks with lots of breathability. That’s not anything I wear. And for me, there’s a lot of Kenny in the hair—like, when he’s in celebrity mode, he slicks it back. The costumes and the hair and all that, that stuff is actually pretty key for him as a character, because with Kenny, when he has big mental changes, it starts from the outside. You know he’s in trouble any time he’s got that all-black look going on.

How so?
You know, it’s him getting all “man in black,” trying to put on this rock-star attitude, that sets him back. The moment he got so consumed with this image of himself as a famous person, Mr. Not-To-Be-Fucked-With, that was when he lost his fastball. I think you see that a lot—when a person stops focusing on whatever it was that made him famous and starts thinking too much about just being famous, it’s all downhill. Kenny’s definitely absorbed in all the trappings.

The rest of the interview…
