Nuuro – The Reddest Ruby

01

Want to know how to launch yourself from general obscurity to internet sensation?

Nuuro has done it in 3 easy steps:

1) Make amazing music that sounds like a matured version of The Postal Service

2) Hire an equally obscure but just as talented graphic designer to make the CD cover and accompanying images (Nikolay Saveliev)

3) Offer it all up for free

Yep, that’s right, Nuuro (a bedroom producer from NYC) has made a truly gorgeous album full of well-crafted electro-pop and is giving it to everyone for free. Some songs may be a little too experimental for some, but it’s hard to complain when you didn’t pay for it. Personally I enjoy every song on it and like to listen to it as a true album, beginning to end.

No need to describe this further. Look at the pictures, preview some choice songs below, and then go download the album.

the-beatles-comme-des-garconTheBeatles

A big announcement has dropped on the fashion/music world. A collaboration line is being created between The Beatles and Comme des Garcons. Speculators feel that the agreement is going to allow for a multi-line collaboration over multiple seasons. Fingers crossed.

“Comme des Garcons and Apple Corps Ltd. – the London-based company that manages the legacy and musical catalog of the British band – are teaming up to launch a new collection of bags under The Beatles/Comme des Garcons label, with the first styles slated to debut mid-November at Dover Street Market, Kawakubo’s multi-brand emporium in London, and Gyre in Tokyo, with additional distribution to follow…”

Here’s some of the greatest songs in the whole wide world:

A.P.C. + Supreme

APC+Supreme

Two serious brands have come together for a two piece collection (technically the smallest collection possible). A.P.C. and Supreme have created a pair of jeans and a T-shirt that will drop on October 1st at A.P.C. and Supreme stores. The T-shirt comes in a red print and a black print, which will be available at Supreme and A.P.C. respectively. The jeans are A.P.C.’s New Standard fit with the addition of some charming embroidery on the back pocket.

Sidenote: A.P.C. makes my favourite pair of raw wash jeans. They’re stiff as hell initially and with wear and no laundry they form into a custom pair softened and creased to your movement.

Where The Wild Things Are + Opening Ceremony

where-the-wild-things-are-opening-ceremony-collection-01

Where The Wild Things Are is one of the most hyped movies yet to come out. Not only that, it’s been one of the coolest examples of creative marketing I’ve seen for a movie release. Spike Jonze, a cool trailer with an arcade fire song, James Gandolfini, and even a Where The Wild Things Are pop-up store in LA are building up mass excitement.

Most recently and most exceptionally, Where The Wild Things Are has teamed up with Opening Ceremony for a limited line that drops on September 28th. The collection includes pieces for girls and guys, consisting of some grizzly looking jackets, onezies and Pamela Love designed jewelry. Go ahead, be a financially unsustainable child; two of the most enjoyable things to be.

Death To The Throne & Lykke Li

Reflector face from the We Give You Face by David Toro and Salomon Chase | Handsome Clothing Co.

Today is big day for Handsome. We’re at the printers finalizing new shirts (yes… NEW shirts) during the day and then I’ll be heading to the Death To The Throne concert for the night. Death To The Throne is a Producer/DJ from Phoenix who makes impressive remixes and apparently hates monarchies.

A remix of Lykke Li’s “Knocked Up” featuring The Kings of Leon, is my personal favorite work he has done. He doesn’t get too crazy on it, keeping the infectious melodies and pumping it up with some distorted synths and sounds reminiscent of Digitalism’s now classic “Pogo”. If I’m not super hung tomorrow, I should have review of the show ready and waiting for all you Handsome people.

BONUS: Because I feel bad about slightly dissing Neon Indian a couple days ago, I’ll post one of his remixes I’ve been into lately. It sounds exactly like how you would imagine someone named Neon Indian would make a song.

Band of Outsiders + Sperry Topsider

It’s taken some restraint not to be another kid with an entire line of Sperry Topsiders in the last year. The time has come to pick up a(nother) pair without hesitation. Band of Outsiders has designed a shoe with Sperry Topsider and they’re looking like the number one spot. They’re simple, light, and clean. These hightop Topsiders are available in Hunter Green, Black and Grey.

You can get them now at Opening Ceremony online or in store for $230.

New Julian Casablancas Song – 11th Dimension

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Julian Casblancas | Handsome Clothing Co.

I think I may enrage a whole legion of pitchfork wielding hipsters with this next statement: I think I like new Julian Casablancas better than Neon Indian & Washed Out. Yeah, I don’t know what to say; there’s something oddly comforting about the new wave electro-pop sounds of bands like MGMT & Passion Pit being filtered through the mind of the lead singer of The Strokes.

What can I say? The man knows how to craft a pop song. On “11th Dimension” Casablancas uses some afrobeat/congaline drums to back some bright synth stabs that has the ultimate effect of being like a super energetic version of the aforementioned Washed Out. I’m sure all the cool kids will immediately knock this as being a sub-par attempt to cash in on the burgeoning electro-pop scene but put any previous prejudices and pre-concieved notions of what this sounds like aside and decide for yourself.

Julian’s new solo album Phrazes For The Young drops October 20th.

The Sound of Arrows – Into The Clouds (Fear of Tigers Remix)

The Sound of Arrows Into The Clouds | Handsome Clothing Co.

When the single “Into The Clouds” was released into the world by our favorite Swedish group The Sound of Arrows, the world got a little brighter. Fast-forward a few months and you may remember a great little remix of Visitors “Los Feeling” that we posted here by a man going by the name of Fear of Tigers.

The styles they both work in are so similar, we always wondered what a Fear of Tigers Remix of a The Sound of Arrows song would sound like. No need to wonder anymore. He speeds up the pace, get rid of some of the less mature sounding sounds of the original (don’t get us wrong we love the slightly cheesy xylophone sounds but it’s nice to hear a different take), and add a ridiculously sweet synth solo. I also appreciate that he made the song a minute longer because really this song could be 10 minutes long and it might still be too short.

Enough pre-pubescent gushing, grab the song and be sure to check out our post about the original song with its accompanying amazing video (made by The Sound of Arrows themselves).

Live Review: Kings of Leon, Hamilton

Monday, September 21, 2009

julia-firearms-auction-front

Kings of Leon played a show in Hamilton as their tour for Only By The Night is getting close to wrapping up and they begin recording a new album. They played a pretty solid show reminiscent of music documentaries from ’70s rock bands. They seemed so typically rock and roll. Matthew on lead guitar lit a new cigarette every second song, which spent half of songs in his mouth and half on the head of his guitar (Van Halen styles) while he played solos. Lead singer Caleb had roadies bring him a shot and chaser between songs, which left his eyes pretty hazy by the encore.

Nevertheless they played a decent set with an extended encore. The family band has got an exceptional fan base, which Caleb thanked in typical frontman fashion. “This has been the best city on the tour! I’m going to tell our manager if Hamilton isn’t on the list next time we come through Canada, I’m not coming!” Not a fan of of the rehearsed banter, but when KOL played a track hard they did it while abusing substances; only making it harder.

Clipse + KAWS + Complex Magazine

complex-clipse-x-kaws

Complex Magazine’s new cover came out online and it’s taken my respect for the magazine to a new level. It’s one of the coolest magazine covers ever, which is what one would expect when combining The Clipse with artist KAWS. The entire photoshoot was done in front of a white screen and then handed to KAWS for some creative mindjuice. Check it out for a video with Pusha T and Malice as well as a full interview with our favourite rap duo.

Pusha and Malice are on another level – Playclothes has been one of the most impressive celebrity brands of the last couple years and Till the Casket drops has been super legit so far. Their third album, Till the Casket drops is out on October 20th, till then you can check Kinda Like a Big Deal and I’m Good, both which rep KAWS artwork. For now, be good.
