Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Damon Winter, a staff photographer for the New York Times has taken part in the column, The Lens Project. The Project allows photographers to make their own commentary through their shots. Damon Winter has created “Neighbors”, which through the use of double exposures has created a phenomenal collection.

You can hear some of Winter’s commentary on the process and see the whole collection here.

Reflecting on “Neighbors”, Winter said “It’s taught me to be patient and try and see ahead of what’s in front of me.” Deep.

Rusko

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

It’s no question dubstep has seen a resurgence of sorts in the last year. Leading this rise of popularity is English artist Rusko. The self-described “human bass tornado” has been making ridiculously huge songs influenced by the reggae and dub sounds of yore for awhile now. If you’re thinking a white kid from England making electronic-Jamaican-dub music is weird, then you probably don’t remember that that is exactly how Norman Cook (AKA Fatboy Slim) got his start.

His song “Jahovah” is the best example of what Rusko has to offer mixing the reggae sound with gigantic futuristic bass drops. If you’re in Toronto be sure to catch Rusko at Sound Academy on Jan 30th. Note: this isn’t your mother’s reggae.

Spike Jonze – I’m Here

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Visionary filmmaker, Spike Jonze’s has a new short film entitled “I’m Here”, which is debuting at Sundance 2010. In conjunction with the release of the film, a limited run book has also been created. Check out the trailer for the movie and some clips from the book. The book is available for purchase through Nieves.

“Spike Jonze’s new half-hour short film titled I’m Here is a robot love story celebrating a life enriched by creativity. The movie is set in contemporary L.A., where life moves at a seemingly regular pace with the exception of a certain amount of robot residents who live among the population. A male robot librarian lives a solitary and methodical life – devoid of creativity, joy and passion – until he meets an adventurous and free spirited female robot.”

cudderisback

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Cudi dropped a little mini documentary last night. The video is a bit on the silly side covering an evening in a Boston hotel room including an abundance of weed and poo commentary. What was exciting about the clip is the song it was set to. “Cudderisback” which dropped in early December over Vampire Weekend’s “Ottoman”, sounds wikid good and of the quality we’ve come to expect from Cudi. The excitement continues to build for Cudder, which is set to come out sometime this year.

Hubero Kororo designed this interactive CD cover for the band Uceroz. When you open the CD packaging on the side, ink is set free and bleeds into the cover of the CD. New, original, and beautiful.

Crocodiles

Saturday, January 23, 2010

I’ve been meaning to post about the Crocodiles forever now and now seems like a good time. It would fit perfectly on a mixtape with our previous post about Harlem. It’s more of that good lo-fi, dreamy, almost beach rock sound, and its done to near perfection on “I Wanna Kill”.

Any band that incites such emotional comments as “You are fucking fraudulent hipster fashion douchebags. You’re making everything suck. You’re like rats, killing anything decent in culture with your fucking retrograde, ironic outlook on fucking everything. Stop making music. You’re killing it. Twats.” which was posted as one of their influences on their MySpace, has to be good. Make your own decision and if you like what you hear be sure to check out their blog for more Crocodile goods.

Harlem, Hippies and Free Drugs ;-)

Saturday, January 23, 2010

There’s something about Austin, Texas. Wolfgang Gartner, Dubbel Dutch, and my latest favorite, Harlem, have all emerged from the lesser known Texas town (compared to The Big D).

It’s odd to include Harlem with the likes of the previous electro heavy artists as these two make garage-rock that actually sounds like it was made in the garage (ie. not only is the sound lo-fi but its fun). With a song titled “Gay Human Bones”, how can it not be fun?

Here are two quotes by the two members of Harlem that should pique your interest:

1. “When kids are jumping on the bed playing tennis rackets like guitars. We are the music that is playing in their brains.”

2. “The only band we like is Nirvana. The only album we like is Nevermind. The only song we like is Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Below is “South of France” off their previous album “Hippies” and “Gay Human Bones” off their new album “Free Drugs ;- )” which is was released today on iTunes.
