Catching Up On Music: The Pixies, The Radio Dept., The Strange Boys, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, and WHY?

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

I’ve been pretty busy working on Handsome’s upcoming release so I haven’t had much time to post the great music I’ve been listening to. Thusly, this post will cover a bunch of the songs that have been getting me through the days. By the way, don’t think because we’ve put all these songs in one post that their somehow not deserving of their own post.

We will start with some light and sunny songs that are sure to lift dragging spirits. The Strange Boys‘ “Be Brave” is perfect for such a task with its jangly garage rock sound that sounds like it belongs in the 60s rather than the 10s (yeah I said 10s).

The Radio Dept. keep the good times coming with their song “Heaven’s On Fire”. Swedish people are crazy good at making pop music. The piano hook in this is simple and beautiful.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults sounds like it could be a really bad emo band from 10 years ago but I can assure you it is not. They make make strummy, whispery, melancholy music with twinkling robot synths and new wave guitars. Basically, a combination of M83 and The Postal Service.

Just in case you thought we were going all soft on you here is an amazing (and hard) remix of The Pixies classic “Where Is My Mind” by Bassnectar. It’s tough to do a successful remix of a classic song while leaving your mark on it but Bassnectar does this brilliantly. By keeping the basic sound of the original intact and adding his signature heavy bass and dubstep beats this screams Bassnectar while still shouting Pixies.
