Williamsburg, NY is ground zero for hipsterdom/fauxhemians (or at the very least patient 0 resided here). It is also home to a much hyped band named Freelance Whales. They are deserving of this hype because of their song “Generator ^ First Floor”. Their band name and song titles remind me of Arcade Fire. Generator ^ First Floor is a deceptively intimate song with a wonderful use of the banjo and chanting vocals. Play this song for your girlfriend/significant other. Prepare to be kissed/hugged.
Aislyn is also from NYC. The duo is made up of one of the members of Passion Pit and his girlfriend. Aislyn sounds like: “a subdued Twitter-generation update of ’90s-era guy-girl electronic-pop—like a kinder, gentler version of Portishead.” – straight.com. They bump up the drama, the electronics, the atmospherics, and the run time while cutting the banjo sound to create a version that fits well with the Penguin Prison‘s and Flow Child‘s of the world.
