Oberhofer

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Need something for your Surfer Blood/Beach House/The Drums/Crocodiles/Japandroids/Girls/Summer Grunge 2010 playlist?

Oberhofer helped fill ours out wonderfully with their song “Away Frm U”. It has an impossibly catchy hook with a xylophone heavy fun rock grunge sound that all comes together to make a winning combination. Oberhofer is set to blow up so check them out first and stop by their blog and download their EP “o0Oo0Oo” for free.

Kira Kira Bless + Video

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Why post an image when you can post a video?

My girlfriend tipped me on Iceland’s Kira Kira and after watching the video above I became a believer. The song and animation are both beautiful. This is some of that downtempo-sigur ros-bjork stuff so get ready to slow your world down a little.

Short Film: Logorama

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

An excellent fifteen minutes of animation, criminal activity and a commercial catastrophe.

The animated short was directed by the French animation collective H5, François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain. After acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival 2009, Logorama opened Sundance 2010 and won an Oscar this year for Best Animated Short.

Two Movies About Electro || The Electro Wars + ElectriCITY

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

As a blogger and a long time fan of electronic music, I find this movie to be really intriguing. It covers the dramatic rise of electro that has been happening over the last few years which, if you’re been a regular visitor of this blog, you know is something we have been championing for quite awhile now.

It’s a bit surreal (as it should be for any longtime fan of electronic music) to actually be able to talk to the average music fan about your Fake Blood’s, Calvin Harris’s, and Boy 8-Bit’s without dismissing you as a “ooonst-ooonst loving gino douchebag” (which I was once called when DJing electro music in 2006 when it wasn’t so popular).

Either way I’m proud of our little community of electronic music fans and as it becomes more and more mainstream it makes us wonder what’s next? Only time will tell.

BONUS: We also want to call attention to a similar movie being made about electro scene specifically in our hometown of Toronto. We’re blessed with a lot of local talented artists (Pilotpriest, MSTRKRFT, Deadmau5, Barletta, Gingy, TMDP, Kidstreet) so its only right we get our own movie.

Ralph Vaessen | Handcrafted Eyewear

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

The story of Ralph Vaessen is quite cool.

A former Dutch government employee and the search for perfect frames led to making a single pair of handmade frames with a German atelier. Fast-forward 4 years and Vaessen now designs handmade luxury frames made of natural buffalo horn. The frames are all made at the German atelier and retail for about 1,000 Euro via retailers such as Colette.

Dazed Digital has an interview with the Dutch designer here about his upcoming collection, inspiration, favourite designers and his preference for buffalo horn.

More frames ahead.

Thom Browne + Supreme

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

It seems like an ongoing mission to figure out Supreme’s recipe that got them to successfully combine skateboarding and luxury street wear better than anybody else. On a recent visit to their flagship store I found a clean space, super loud punk music and employees arguing over the appraised value of their chains.

Outside their store you’ll find exceptional retailers worldwide carrying their clothes/accessories and collaborations with high end designers. We’re not sure how retailers that base their image on brands like Comme Des Garcons and Acne all of a sudden have Supreme skate decks stacked on display.

In Supreme’s ongoing trend of excellence comes their collaboration with a previous GQ Designer of the Year winner, Thom Browne. Browne, known for his shrunken suits has gone from awkward obscurity to acclaim and praise in the last couple of years. Now in one of the most interesting collaborations so far this year, Thom Browne and Supreme collaborate on a set of oxford shirts that bring Browne into the vocabulary of street kids and further Supreme’s quest into high end fashion.

The shirts will be available at the Supreme store and online March 25th.

More detailed pictures of the oxford ahead as well as a glimpse of Thom Browne outside the context of the Supreme collaboration.

Short Film: NY-Z: Jay-Z + Absolut

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

One of the biggest driving forces of Handsome is the simple pursuit of living the dream. We constantly find our eyes setting on people doing what they love and taking risks in doing so. We also appreciate the many who have earned their dreams and among those is Jay-Z who sits as a source of inspiration.

Absolut teamed up with the hardworking man in a short film entitled NY-Z. Fifteen minutes of black and white shots will leave you a little more educated on Jay-Z, New York, business, art and inspiration.

Oliver Peoples Clip-On/Flip-Up

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Oliver Peoples released a video campaign a little while back featuring Elijah Wood and Shirley Manson repping some great pieces from Oliver People’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection. One of my favourites were the flip-up shades that Elijah sports; such functional beauty.

With a little research I found that you’ll be able to get both Oliver Peoples’ Riley frames (pictured) as well as the Sheldrake in a clip-on/flip-up version. They’ll be a great way to distinguish yourself from the Wayfayers this summer.

More detailed pictures ahead.

First Listen/Preview/Review: MGMT’s New Album “Congratulations”

Monday, March 22, 2010

If you didn’t know (or did know but didn’t think you would care) the new MGMT album has been posted in its entirety (stream) and its actually good.

This statement actually means something as I may have been the only person under the sun to not like their first album beyond the standouts of “Kids” and “Time To Pretend” (no matter how overplayed they became). MGMT claims that this is their CD with no singles (allergies to fame perhaps?). They seem to be actively trying to scare people away by saying such things and releasing “Flash Delirium” as their first single to the blogs (probably the weakest song on the album).

This is a great album that may be too much of a departure for fans of their earlier stuff but I am much more into this new sound. The album sounds like they wanted it to be their “Pet Sounds” and resembles surf rock (a la Beach Boys) mixed with a little bit of space (Bowie is always an influence whether you realize it or not).

Regardless, make up your own mind and go listen to the album.

P.S. I’m a sucker for the album cover above. Looks a lot like some of the binders/trapper keeper I had in the early 90s.

VIDEO: Jamaica – I Think I Like U 2

Monday, March 22, 2010

New video for the Xavier de Rosnay produced song “I Think I Like U 2″ by Jamaica. This video was made by So-Me who you may remember as the first victim of one of Kanye West’s award ceremony meltdowns (at the MTV European Music Awards in 2006). The video is looking good and I’m glad he’s gotten a little away from the played out cartoony illustration feel he came to power with.

If you like the song check out our previous post about Jamaica.
