One of the most surreal, inspiring, beautiful, confusing and strange documentaries I have ever seen.
“Henry Darger, an elderly recluse, spent his childhood in an Illinois asylum for feeble-minded children and his adulthood working as a janitor. He lived a quiet, nearly solitary existence, but his imaginary life was exciting, colorful and sexually provocative. When he died in Chicago in 1973, his landlady discovered in his room 300 paintings, some over 10 feet long, and a 15,000-page illustrated novel (The Realms of the Unreal), which told the epic story of the virtuous Vivian Girls, seven angelic sisters who lead a rebellion against godless, child-enslaving men.”
At the end of the film you are left wondering if Henry Darger was a madman or a genius. We believe he is a genius and probably one of the most important American artists (or simply artist) to exist. The Realms of the Unreal stands as the longest novel ever written.
If you’re rich, you’re eccentric; if you’re poor, you’re crazy…
The shop has been restocked. If you’re one of those people that been wanting some Handsome clothing but couldn’t grab anything because we were sold out, we humbly apologize for the wait and we hope you can grab a piece before we run out for the last time (yes… that means new pieces are in the works).
Japanese cool kids are amongst the coolest in the world. Here’s an interview with Verbal and Yoon of Ambush. You’ve probably seen some Ambush jewelery pieces on people like Cudi and Big Sean who both rep a POW piece on the regular. Verbal (Teriyaki Boyz front man) and Yoon also recently collaborated with A Bathing Ape on some jewelery pieces and footwear.
Here’s an interesting interview by T.M.I. (Too Much Information) with the two of them going over style, design, the collaborative process and a get-started-on-your-dream message from the duo.
French artist Parra has come out with a handful of Nike collaborations now, but our favourite ones have been his Air Max 1s. His first pair were super clean with subtle Parra splashes of colour on a black base. The most eccentric part of the shoe was the practically hidden insole (pictured ahead).
This time around, Parra has done up another pair of Air Max 1 sneakers that are a lot more colourful (pictured above). The sneakers have a lot going on including a multitude of colours, suede, mesh and of course custom insoles.
The Parra Air Max 1 is available on March 13, 2010 through Patta.
What do you get when you mix spray painted wooden blocks, black lights, stop-motion photography, and meticulously stitching 4085 photos together? A word of caution: Mind melting may occur. Visual Artist Rogier van der Zwaag acts as creative eye for the band Nobody Beats The Drum, and was given the task to create the video for their song Grindin’. Take a deep breath and enjoy.
I came across Jaime Hayon and his exceptional work recently. The skater-based artist complimented his natural talent with a degree in industrial design, which resulted in his amazing and unique aesthetic. Here’s a little excerpt from his bio. Continue reading for a glimpse at more of his work.
Jaime Hayón Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, the foundation of the detailed, bold-yet-whimsical imagery so imminent in his work today…Jaime further defined his vision in subsequent solo exhibitions and shows at London’s Aram Gallery, and Milan’s Salone de Mobile and his work has been displayed in Germany’s Vitra Museum, London’s Design Museum, Rotterdam’s Vivid Gallery, the Gronginger Museum (also in Holland) and the Basel Art Fair and has attracted the attention of prestigious art collectors.
Quentin Tarantino, Upper Playground, SA Global’s Film Marketing Division and the Weinstein Company have teamed up on The Lost Art of Inglourious Basterds. A series of pieces inspired by our movie of the year will be available on February 18th between 6pm-9pm at The Upper Playground Art Gallery in Downtown LA.
Artists include: David Choe, Sam Flores, Estevan Oriol, Grotesk, Jeremy Fish, Patrick Martinez, Alex Pardee, Dora Drimalas, Munk One, N8 Van Dyke, Rene Alamanza, Morning Breath and Skinner Davis.
The bad news is that there will be no orders accepted over the phone or online. The good news is that the limited edition prints will be available for $300 each which will go towards The American Red Cross to help the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

Damon Winter, a staff photographer for the New York Times has taken part in the column, The Lens Project. The Project allows photographers to make their own commentary through their shots. Damon Winter has created “Neighbors”, which through the use of double exposures has created a phenomenal collection.
You can hear some of Winter’s commentary on the process and see the whole collection here.
Reflecting on “Neighbors”, Winter said “It’s taught me to be patient and try and see ahead of what’s in front of me.” Deep.
